Days 19-20: Lassen National Forest/Park and Reno, NV

Friday, May 14th and Saturday, May 15th

  • We're not really sure why we decided to use Reno as a staging ground for the next part of our trip - Yosemite National Park. There's a temple here, but it seems now that Sacramento would have been closer, and there's a temple there too. Oh well.
  • On Friday we drove on windy highway 299 East and passed Whiskeytown Lake - temps were in the mid 80's and we were thinking it would have been cool just to stay there. Even with 40 days, there is still not enough time to do everything we would like.
  • We drove to Lassen Volcanic National Park, but most of the park was closed and there wasn't much to see - so we camped at a lower elevation in the Lassen National Forest.
  • We explored a subway cave carved out by lava.

  • On Saturday we purchased some awesome sunglasses at a market in Susanville, CA.
  • We made it to Reno and were grateful for the chance to wash our clothes, shower, do some grocery shopping, go to the temple, and go out for a nice dinner. Seriously, the Mushroom Gnocchi that Jennifer ordered was incredible.
  • We're now at the halfway point, we've driven 2,676 miles, visited 6 states, attended the inside of 5 temples, visited 4 National Parks, and camped 7 nights. We've also just recently made the intimidating goal to spot the license plates of all 50 states during our trip. We're at 12.
  • I'll try to post more pictures for these days later - the internet is being slow...on to Yosemite, then Las Vegas next weekend.
